Stress is a big factor in more than 75% of all illnesses diagnosed today with many studies putting this figure closer to 90%.  The human body is hard-wired to experience stress to alert you to a potentially hazardous situation. This type of reaction was originally created by the body to encourage prehistoric forefathers to flee from sharp-toothed predators and other danger.

Today stress is caused by many factors.  It is often referred to as the “silent killer” and is considered a normal condition for many.  Road rage, violence and outbursts are often blamed on stress from work and life in general.  Overexposure to cortisol and other hormones released during stress can lead to a variety of long-term health problems.

It’s natural to have stress.  Everyone requires some positive tension to help with motivation, energy and enthusiasm for life.  However, beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and may start causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships and your quality of life as well as disrupting nearly every system in your body.  Long-term stress may even rewire your brain and make you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.  Many health problems are caused or intensified by stress.

According to the Mayo Clinic, reflexology is generally relaxing and may be an effective way to alleviate stress. Studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep.

Gentle foot reflexology is an effective relaxing way to slow down your heart rate, lower blood pressure, slow your breathing and, most of all, reduce stress.  It is scientifically proven to relieve some medical conditions and promote feelings of well-being while decreasing tension, pain and unhealthy stress throughout the body.  Reflexology supports you physically, emotionally and spiritually.  It helps your body to achieve a healthy balance and supports it in the process of self-healing.

Got stress? For a limited time, PANACEA is offering two reflexology sessions for $99 (a $180 value!).  Call 860~294~1296 to book an appointment and discover how gentle foot reflexology can help you.

Hoʻoponopono Magic

Ho’oponopono is a Hawaiian word meaning ‘to make right’ and is a way of making things right in our lives. It is an ancient Hawaiian practice for healing, reconciliation and forgiveness that has been used in Hawaiian and other Polynesian cultures for centuries to support harmonious relationships between people, nature and Spirit.

Originally Ho’oponopono was used in situations where there was conflict among family members.  A kahuna or doctor would be contacted to uncover problems, practice forgiveness and release family members from accusations, grudges and guilt. During Ho’oponopono, families would participate in prayer, confession, discussion, repentance, restitution and forgiveness.

In 1976, Morrnah Simeona developed an updated version of Ho’oponopono to be used individually for self-healing and personal development. This modern version, called ‘Self-Identity through Ho’oponopono’ or ‘SITH’, is a general problem solving process that goes beyond the family to create a spiritual self-help process.

Morrnah’s version was greatly influenced by her religious education as well as her philosophical studies about India, China and Edgar Cayce. The modern adaptation focuses on prayer the same as the ancient Hawaiian version. But unlike traditional Ho’oponopono, Morrnah said problems are the results of negative Karma.  She believed that “you have to experience by yourself what you have done to others,” and “you are the creator of your life situation”.  Any improper action, activity, or “doing” is memorized within yourself and reflected in each and every entity and thing that was present when the “doing” took place. The purpose is “to release unhappy, negative experiences in past reincarnations, and to resolve and remove traumas from the ‘memory banks’.”  Modern Ho’oponopono is about forgiveness, love, and acceptance and does not conflict with religious beliefs.

Ho’oponopono is taking total responsibility for everything in your life. If you see someone who is suffering, you have brought that person into your life and are responsible for them being there. You are not responsible for the person or their suffering, only for them being there.  If you are suffering in any way or if you are happy, you are responsible for those feelings.  To take one hundred per cent responsibility means viewing every situation as a projection of something inside of you, rather than an external situation. With Ho’oponopono all of the problems you experience start inside of you, and will only go away by working on yourself.

The idea behind Ho’oponopono is that everything that is wrong in our lives is simply our bodies or our circumstances replaying old memories, feelings or beliefs. Every word, action, and deed, both good and bad, is held in the subconscious, along with the beliefs and thoughts we were brought up with. Some of those beliefs influence your life and the way you live and you are most likely still using them as an excuse not to allow yourself the easy life and the riches you deserve.

In order to make things right again, those old memories or feelings must be cleaned.  Ho’oponopono allows the release of memories, feelings or beliefs that are held in our subconscious and causing us problems. It can permanently heal and clear the energies held by current and past situations and people in a few minutes each day as the layers of beliefs and memories are gradually peeled away.  Ho’oponopono can be used to deal with negative feelings when someone has upset you or hurt you, as well as for any kind of forgiveness.

The Ho’oponopono experience can be both beautiful and uplifting. Once you have learned the practice you can use it spontaneously when needed. Silently chant the Ho’oponopono mantra during or after an argument and feel your stress dissipate and the other person relax and back away from the conflict. The Ho’oponopono phrases can be used as a forgiveness mantra, repeating them until your heart softens, your mood lightens, and you feel that harmony is restored. The ultimate outcome is that you can think about the incident and/or the other person with calmness and serenity and without negative feelings. If the upset feelings return, you can simply try the process again.

Ho’oponopono consists of four phrases: “I love you. I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.” The practice is called “cleaning”. By repeating the mantra, you clean yourself of your own negative feelings to erase from your memory or consciousness whatever is not working for you. You are expressing the fact that you no longer wish to suffer from a current or past problem.

Ho’oponopono is used to obtain forgiveness for yourself for whatever is within you that helped to create the problem.  First you need to bring to mind a situation or memory that bothers you.  If you find yourself worrying about something, say to that worry:

I love you. (addresses the problem, yourself, and the Universe/the Divine or whatever you believe in.)

I’m sorry. (addresses you and the Universe/the Divine for whatever it is in you that attracted or allowed this thing into your life.)

Please forgive me. (asks for forgiveness for attracting or allowing this thing into your life.)

Thank you. (addresses you and the Universe/the Divine for cleaning this memory and transmuting the problem.)

You can say the mantra out loud or mentally and the words can be in whatever order they feel right to you. Say them if something upsets you, makes you angry, makes you cry, worries or frightens you. Say them if you are having problems with someone else. Say them whenever possible.  Repeat them every time a memory or problem comes up. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what is causing the problem.  By saying the words you allow the Universe to clean the energy around the problem. Repeat the mantra until you feel it’s time to stop. And as you say the words, observe what comes up. If a different memory or problem appears do Ho’oponopono on that too. Also, if you are glad or happy, acknowledge it by saying “I love you. Thank you.”

There are many ways to use Ho’oponopono.  I use it at night before I go to sleep, in the morning when I wake up, while I am driving, any time I think of it.  It can be used for a headache or other pain by saying to the pain “I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.” The possibilities are limitless.

If people around you have problems, do Ho’oponopono mentally as you encounter them. Know that you’re not working on the people, rather on your own awareness of their problems and how they affect you. Ho’oponopono can be used anywhere, any time and in any situation. Whatever the problem is, just keep saying the words over and over to yourself without expectations and watch what happens as you peel back the layers of your personality and reveal your true self while making right the things that are wrong in your life.

Step Right with Reflexology

Reflexology is a protocol of manual techniques applied to specific reflex areas on the feet. These techniques stimulate the complex neural pathways linking body systems, supporting the body’s efforts to function optimally. The effectiveness of reflexology is recognized worldwide by various national health institutions and the public at large as a distinct complementary practice within the holistic health field.

The practice of Reflexology dates back thousands of years and has a history in India, Egypt, China and Native American traditions.  It is a non-invasive treatment that is intended to reduce generalized stress and help the body achieve a state of deep relaxation and homeostasis. Receiving a session mobilizes an individual’s physical, mental and spiritual energies, fighting imbalance in the system and assisting the body to heal itself.

Many people are on their feet all day, putting a lot of weight and stress on their feet. Reflexology may be an especially useful complementary treatment for neuropathy of the legs, feet and toes. It can also be useful for sore feet after a workout, running or taking a long walk.

A typical reflexology session runs an hour. Shoes and socks are removed, and the client is made comfortable sitting or reclining.  The reflexes are stimulated with specific manipulations that are generally pleasant and relaxing.  Reflexology has been shown to be effective and to assist with self-healing for many conditions.

Benefits of Reflexology

Total Relaxation:  Reflexology slows down the heart rate, lowers blood pressure, slows the breathing rate and reduces stress.  It has been known to open neural pathways, resulting in a more relaxed state in the body.  A session can induce a state of calm throughout your body and mind.

Nerve Function: The nerve endings become less sensitive in parts of the body with  age.  A Reflexology session can stimulate more than 7,000 nerve endings, increasing their function and reactivity. The process of opening and clearing neural pathways can help improve the functionality and flexibility of many areas in the body.

Improved Well-being:   The body is more susceptible to illness and disease when stressed.  Per American Medical Association, 85% of illness is due to stress. Reflexology reduces stress and provides total relaxation.  It may also be helpful for pain, such as a migraine or joint pain, as it may reduce the severity by relieving tension in the muscles.

Circulation:  Improved circulation throughout the body allows more oxygen to reach the organs, improving their function and resulting in the healing and re-growth of damaged cells.  Many studies show reflexology increases blood flow and relaxes the overall body, including the cardiovascular system, which helps pump blood naturally.

Improved immunity:  Reflexology stimulates the lymphatic system, reducing the risk of infection. It helps remove toxins and induces the production of endorphins, resulting in increased immunity and a sense of wellbeing.

Energy Levels:  Reflexology can increase metabolism and boost energy by aligning the functioning of the body’s organs and muscles.

Birth and Labor:  Reflexology has been shown to help initiate and stimulate labor.  Women who received reflexology during labor also had a shorter active labor time than women who did not receive it.

Women’s Health:  PMS pain and symptoms are common in women. Studies show that PMS pain was reduced in 95% of women after they received reflexology. Women with menopausal symptoms may also benefit from reflexology.

Digestive Health:  Reflexology improves blood flow to the intestines and stimulates better digestion, helping the system to run more efficiently and effectively.

Reasons to Avoid Reflexology

Reflexology is generally safe for everyone, but there are some reasons to avoid it.  Please make your practitioner aware of any contraindications prior to receiving a session.

The following are reasons to avoid reflexology – open sores on the feet; acute injuries to the legs/feet; anyone with active blood clots;  burns, wounds, gout and infections to the feet; lower extremity swelling or chronic skin changes that are a result of vascular problems to the feet; recent removal of a cancerous tumor or other surgical procedures, such as wart removal.

Reflexology is complimentary to standard medical care and should not be interpreted as medical advice. It is not intended to cure diseases or ailments, but can be a valuable way of indicating areas where higher stress or tension is present in the body.  Reflexology can help to relieve stress or tension, supporting the body’s natural healing process.

Champissage™ Indian Head Massage

Massage has played an important part in India for thousands of years.  Infants often receive a daily massage from birth until age three to keep them supple and in good health.  From ages three to six children receive weekly massages. After age six, they are taught to share a massage with family.  Champissage™ is based on the tradition of massage playing an essential role in family life.

The concept of head massage was originally developed by women who used different oils according to the season and individual needs to keep their long hair strong, lustrous and in beautiful condition.  Barbers practiced many of the same techniques with male clients. However, treatments offered by barbers differed from the massages performed by women. A champi was an invigorating scalp massage designed to stimulate and refresh the individual and was not considered part of a beauty regime.  Regular head massage, as practiced by woman to beautify their hair, was soothing and relaxing.

Narendra Mehta, the creator of Champissage™, grew up with head massage as an integral part of his life. It was something experienced every time he visited a barber.  When Narendra arrived in England in 1973 to train as a Physical Therapist, he discovered that head massage was not generally available. Five years later he returned to India to research the art of head massage. He found that barbers focused on the scalp and women focused on the hair and everyone had their own individual technique, which had been handed down and developed through generations.  Applying his heightened sensitivity as a blind person, he discovered which part of his body reacted most positively to specific moves.  He determined that the massage could benefit by being expanded to include areas that accumulate high levels of stress and tension, specifically the face, neck, upper arms and shoulders, and that by introducing an Ayurvedic element the body’s entire energy system could be rebalanced.

By adding these elements to the traditional head massage, Narendra discovered a holistic therapy which could be used effectively to treat the whole person. Experience had shown him that working on the head brings tremendous relaxation and relief from stress-related symptoms. In addition, he knew that head massage with oil serves as an excellent hair conditioner. Thus, Indian Champissage™ was developed from an ancient practice to become a contemporary therapy.

What is Champissage™?

Champissage™ is a massage of the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, and scalp, ears and face together with energy balancing. The recipient is seated and remains fully clothed. It is a wonderfully relaxing therapy that is safe, and very effective, without the need to undress or use oils.  A Champissage™ session is pleasurable. There is no heavy manipulation.  As you sit with your eyes closed, the practitioner’s fingertips ruffle your hair, patter across your head and face like cool raindrops and gently stimulate your earlobes.

Benefits of Champissage™

The aim of Indian head massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders.  The process is used as a therapeutic treatment for problems related to the upper body.  It enhances the circulation to the lymph and heart, dispersing toxins from previously congested muscles, and stimulating the lymphatic system. This aids in the treatment and prevention of many illnesses. Improved circulation results in increased oxygen uptake in the tissues promoting mental alertness and clarity.

Champissage™ can provide relief from aches and pains, stress, insomnia, promote hair growth and soothe, comfort and rebalance your energy flow, resulting in a deep sense of peace, calm and tranquility.  Stress relief and all round relaxation is the ultimate goal of this technique.

Is Champissage™ for You?

Although Champissage™ is safe, there are a few situations and health conditions where it should be avoided. In order to help you to decide whether this treatment could have a positive effect on your life these conditions are as follows:

·        high or low blood pressure
·        general illness
·        food poisoning
·        after accidents, injuries or surgery involving the head, neck or upper back
·        localized infectious skin disorder around the areas to be worked on
·        under the influence of alcohol
·        severe inflammation
·        infectious diseases

If you suffer from tension around the head, jaw and face, and prefer a quick, less invasive massage, Champissage™ may be something to consider.

kids bars

What if your child could have more ease socially, improve their study habits, sleep, ability to cope in different situations, manage stress levels or develop a deeper connection with their body?  What if it didn’t take much to transform your child’s experiences with life?

Access Bars® is a gentle, hands-on body process run on 32 points on the head.  It can create ease, peace and a sense of wellbeing similar to a massage or meditation.  The process is practiced worldwide as a gentle therapy that empowers the client to know that they can choose something different.

The Bars® releases tension, stress, worries, aids in concentration for study and assists hugely if done before a test or exam.  After having their Bars run, many children are much happier and do better in school and at home. They tend to sleep sounder, relate better with peers, get in less trouble and have fewer tantrums and outbursts. Times that used to be difficult, such as mornings, evenings, homework or chores, typically lose their charge and are much calmer.

One mother of a young teenager ran her son’s Bars for about 10 minutes prior to a geography test.  Despite the fact that he did not study he aced the test. A young girl, labeled learning disabled in high school, started having her Bars run on a regular basis.  She changed from being a special needs student to creating her own business tutoring her fellow students, using “The Bars” as well as some other techniques of Access Consciousness®.  Six year later she is in the honors program at college.

Several doctors in different disciplines who are experts in biofeedback and brainwaves have described changes in their own brain waves during and after they received Bars sessions. They unanimously described moving from the “normal” waking state of beta into alpha states, the state in which natural learning and absorption of information with ease is possible which may enable students to test better. Children who have their Bars run function from alpha state and are able to learn, absorb and deliver information easier.  For more info click on this video by Dr. Jeffrey Fannin.

Parents have also found that the Bars may help children who have ADD, ADHD or autism, suffer from anxiety or depression, lack self-esteem, are moody or misbehave or have experienced emotional or physical trauma.  What contribution could the Bars be to your family?

Weaving a Web with Etheric Healing

Through the Etheric Body the past, present and future, the mind, emotions and the physical all come together and can be healed.  Etheric healing focuses on balancing the Etheric Body, also known as the Etheric Field, which is the area of one’s aura that is closest to the physical body, and serves as the interface between the physical body and the aura.

Etheric Healing aligns you to a peaceful, meditative state that allows the meridians and chakras to be balanced as you become attuned to the higher vibration of light. It often leads to immediate results, is a very safe therapy and suits many conditions. Stress and illness cause a body’s energy to become unbalanced or depleted and the body can no longer heal itself. Disease disrupts the energy flow, often manifesting in the physical body as pain. Illness, disease and injury will manifest in the Etheric Body before they appear in the physical body. Even when other modalities have failed, healing the Etheric Body in conjunction with these modalities can lead to amazing results because the physical body is healed from the outside in.

One way to heal the Etheric Body is by using an Etheric Weaver. The Weaver is a healing tool that draws in universal energy and transfers it to the individual through the chakras. It is a transmitter and receiver made of crystals, copper and magnets that opens and balances blockages in the etheric field.

During an Etheric healing session an Etheric Weaver is held over the body like a pendulum. It naturally begins to swing, weaving patterns over and into the body, wherever treatment is needed. The weaver stops when the energy flow between the body and the Chi is balanced.  The movement of the weaver is in response to many levels of the etheric field, including past lives.

Using the Weaver on someone is a process of facilitating, rather than being a healer. The intention is set that a healing takes place and the weaver is allowed to work. The Etheric Weaver is not a diagnostic device or means for divination or reading, nor it is a manipulative or invasive type of energy therapy.  It helps to naturally resonate with your etheric field to awaken the body’s self-healing mechanisms.

Often the person being treated will have an instant response, feeling subtle electrical stimulation throughout the body.  Most people enter a transcendental and meditative state which may include manifestations like odors, colors, sounds, astral forms, emotions, pain, heat, visions or the releasing of negative energies held in the etheric field.  No thought is necessary and there is no need on the part of the person holding the weaver to try and direct, understand, interpret or diagnose the process.

On a physical level, many conditions and ailments benefit noticeably from Weaver treatments and surface wounds heal speedily.  Etheric Weavers are also effective for healing emotional and psychological issues with lasting effects.  They help to disintegrate the negative conscious mind that holds on to patterns of thinking such as this is the way it is, this is who I am, I can’t change or this is the way it’s always been and always will be.

Reported benefits from using the Etheric Weaver have been spiritual, mental, emotional and physical, extending well beyond the initial period of meditative relaxation.  Etheric Healing helps to develop good Chi, or life force, making it possible to minimize stress, helps to prevent the cause and conditions of disease on all levels and creates a balanced energetic exchange resulting in rejuvenation and self-vitalization.

Some Etheric Weavers are color coded while others are pure quartz crystals.  There are ten different weavers including clear, the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, light blue, indigo, and violet), rainbow colored (in traditional chakra color order) and seven ray colored (rainbow colors in the order of the 7-Rays of God).  They are tools for color therapy which vibrationally resonate to attune to the chakras bringing clearing and alignment where needed.

People report many benefits after even one healing – my own clients have written testimonials on my website reporting feelings of lightness and joy, peacefulness and relaxation and  immediate and lasting pain relief.

Kansa Wands

For centuries, ancient Ayurvedic wisdom and unique tools have been used together to enhance health and strength, increase energy, support general well-being and longevity and relieve stress.

Kansa, the healing metal of India, was first created in the Bronze Age approximately 5000 years ago by the same culture that is thought to have developed  Ayurveda.  It is an alloy of copper and tin that is called bronze in the West.

Kansa is considered to be the healing metal of Ayurveda.  It has a powerful effect as a stress reliever and for relaxation.

The many uses of Kansa include making utensils and implements used in ceremonies.  There is also the tradition of Ayurvedic physicians recommending the use of Kansa on the feet for their clients.

The Kansa massage tool is said to be even more effective than gold or silver. The wands can be used to achieve superb results on the face, feet and other parts of the body. The tradition of Kansa massage has immense benefits and has been practiced for generations in some parts of the world.

In the words of Melanie and Robert Sachs “Traditionally, Kansa is said to pull Pitta or excess fieriness that has accumulated in our tissues out of the body through our skin. Some of this is because of the physical process of friction (rubbing). The result is the pulling and drawing of heat, acidity, inflammation and toxins out of the body. Because of the nature of piezoelectricity and how it courses through the body, Kansa vataki was employed on the feet to have a drawing effect of heat and strain away from the eyes. We have personally seen eyes become less bloodshot and the high skin tones normalize just by rubbing the feet with the Kansa foot wand.”

Modern medicine is also learning the benefits of implements primarily made of copper.  Copper rich surfaces are unfriendly to harmful microbes so, like gold, this precious alloy is very clean and cleansing for the skin and microparticles of copper support healthy collagen.

Kansa is the metal used for sacred Tibetan bells and gongs. It is highly resonant. Using the wand can be thought of as a tuning up the face or body in a way similar to listening to Tibetan gong sounds that lift your spirit.

The following Kansa treatments are offered at PANACEA.

  • Helps to tone, tighten and firm the skin
  • Helps with reducing puffiness, fine lines and redness around the eyes by moving extra Pitta, heat and acidity out of the body
  • Plumps out wrinkles
  • Helps with congestion in the skin and sinuses
  • Mobilizes toxins and calms inflammation, redness and heat
  • Normalizes skin tones and helps the skin become fresh and clear
  • Helps move lymph and improves circulation so the skin is better cleansed and nourished

Rubbing Kansa over the feet is one of the most traditional uses of Kansa for enhanced wellness.

  • Helps to balance the Ayurvedic doshas
  • Enhances the effect of any reflexology session or massage
  • Creates a calming and cooling effect in the body
  • Relaxes the entire foot
  • Helps the client feel light, energized and calmed
  • Calms the entire nervous system
  • May have a soothing effect on mild pains
  • Erases stress and tiredness in the feet or any muscle group
  • Helps to relax the whole body and calm the mind
  • Makes it easier to fall into a deep, relaxing sleep

Marma points, or subtle energy points, are the centers for vital-force energy, similar to acupuncture points.  Trauma, stress and living out of touch with the body and self are believed to cause a closing of the marma points, disturbing the flow of energy and allowing toxins, negative emotions and stress to get lodged in the points.

This treatment involves using a marma tool on the upper chest, upper back, face, neck and head to help alleviate stress, panic and anxiety.
